Get out of the summer city heat and into the park, where international phenomenon Shen Wei Dance will perform for free! If you only know Shen Wei from the opening ceremony at the Beijing Olympics, he has much more to offer: the company will bring two of its better-known pieces, Map and Collective Measures, to the Celebrate Brooklyn! festival.

July 17th, Prospect Park Bandshell, Free.

2. Lincoln Center Festival: Rennie Harris and Pam Tanowitz

The summer continues with an increasingly diverse variety of free outdoor dance performances:

First, Rennie Harris Puremovement will present the US premiere of A Batalha do Passinho, bringing the Brazilian dueling hip-hop dance form passinho  to the US for the first time. The piece is co-presented by the Rio de Janeiro’s Secretary of Culture and Brasil Summerfest. Next up, choreographer Pam Tanowitz will offer excerpts of her latest hit, The Spectators, with live music from Grammy-winning classical music group Eighth Blackbird.

Claire Salant discovered dance when she was six years old in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She moved to New York to go to Barnard College, where she studied history, math, and dance. She is freelance dancer in New York, academic teacher to students of all ages, and she occasionally finds ways to combine the two. Currently she is working through a dance injury, and is therefore engaging the dance world off her feet rather than on them!
